Whoa Studios

The Brief

What started as a vision for a family live puppet theatre, has evolved into something much more. Whoa Studios, located in the heart of Henderson Auckland, is a space for children and families to enjoy, learn and experience, equipped with two puppeteer theatres, a filming production area, a live set, a family restaurant and a kid’s theme park.

With their space expanding so quickly over the last 4 years there was a need to update the audio visual equipment to improve the experience for their audience.

At the completion of the project, Whoa Studios is able to offer a whole new environment filled with dynamic and exciting experiences, using a complete HARMAN solution.

The Solution

After demoing the Yamaha and Soundcraft Mixing consoles, the Soundcraft mixing console was chosen for its ease of use, the fact it could integrate with Dante, MADI and other distribution models. The final digital audio routing solution is a 64/32 Stage Box connected via fibre to the Soundcraft Vi-3000 console, then via Dante to the BSS DSP Processors, then BLULINK to the Crown Amplifiers. Only Harman could provide this end to end solution, and at only 0.9ms latency.

After many tests with microphones, the AKG HC-81 headset microphones were the obvious choice due to the overall sound quality, and the fact they would stay on the puppeteer’s heads when crawling under stages and running around back of house to get to other areas of the stage.

Therefore, it was decided that the whole AV solution should be specified Harman where possible. AMX was then chosen as the preferred video switching & distribution as AMX was already the control system in place. Due to the live theatre delivery, and the high quality content filming using Red Cameras, the DGX100 series switcher was chosen as the video solution. Projector mapping was suggested in conjunction with specialist lighting to create themes for the shows. This is quite a unique part of the delivery, and a main component now written in to all live shows.
